How we measure
What the domain check measures
The checker pulls monthly organic search traffic data from Ahrefs Site Explorer, specifically the metrics-history endpoint. We track organic clicks: the estimated number of clicks a domain received from organic search results each month.
Data spans from January 2022 to the latest complete month. We exclude the current partial month. All subdomains are collapsed into the registrable domain, so shop.nike.com and news.nike.com both count toward nike.com.
Results are cached on our server for 24 hours. A second check of the same domain within that window returns the cached result instantly, without calling Ahrefs again.
The verdicts
Every check shows two numbers side by side: the change from peak month and the trend over the last 12 months. The verdict combines both signals.
| Verdict | Rule | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| dying | ≤ −30% from peak | Far below peak and still falling |
| bleeding | −30% to −10% from peak | Below peak, trend still negative |
| vulnerable | ≤ −10% from peak, last 12m recovering | Volume recovered, still well below peak |
| stable | −10% to +10% from peak | Roughly at historical peak |
| growing | ≥ +10% from peak | Above previous peak |
Example: A domain peaked at 100,000 clicks in 2023. It now has 50,000 clicks (−50% from peak) and the last 12 months show +12% vs the 12 months before that. Result: vulnerable: recovered some volume, but still far below peak.
Definitions
Peak month
The single calendar month across the entire dataset with the highest organic clicks.
Latest month
The most recent complete calendar month in the dataset (excluding the current partial month).
vs peak
(latest − peak) / peak × 100%. The percentage change from the peak month to the latest month.
last 12 months
Sum of organic clicks in the last 12 months divided by the sum of the 12 months before that, expressed as a percentage change. Shows whether the domain is gaining or losing traffic in the recent period.
What it does NOT measure
Revenue. Organic clicks are a vanity metric. They say nothing about conversion rate, average order value, or business health.
Brand health. Declining clicks might reflect a strategic shift, a focus on paid channels, or simply less SEO spend. It doesn't mean the brand is unhealthy.
Paid traffic, direct visits, or referrals. We show organic search only. A domain might compensate for lost organic clicks with other channels.
Citations in AI answers. AI Overviews and agentic search systems don't always link back to the original domain. Citation or answer-share data is not part of this free check.
The named-brand charts on the home page
The 15 brand charts (Nike, Samsung, Adidas, Apple, Microsoft, and others) show monthly organic clicks pulled from the same Ahrefs Site Explorer endpoint using the same method as the domain checker. These are refreshed manually via script.
The brands are presented as data points about search behaviour in their categories, not as judgements of the companies themselves. A brand appearing on this page says nothing about product quality or company value.
Product screenshots on the page are example views of the Ahrefs interface or competitor tools, illustrating what the underlying data looks like. They are not live customer data or real usage examples.
Fair use and limits
The checker is free to use. To protect the service, each visitor is rate-limited:
- 5 checks per minute (burst limit per IP)
- 30 uncached checks per 24 hours (per IP; cached results don't count)
- 400 upstream Ahrefs calls per day (global pool across all users)
The checker is not for scraping or bulk domain lists. Data stays on our server; the Ahrefs API key never reaches your browser.
Privacy
When you enter a domain, it is sent to our server and forwarded to Ahrefs to fetch the data. We cache the aggregated result (the monthly clicks series) on our server for 24 hours. The domain input itself is not logged.
